Strike forces Finnair to cancel 110 flights on Friday
National flag carrier Finnair will cancel about 110 flights on Friday due to a four-hour strike enforced by the trade unions, said Finnair in a press release on Wednesday.
The Finnish Aviation Union (IAU) decided to observe the strike as the unions unanimously rejected the negotiation proposal made by the mediator regarding renewal of the collective agreement for aviation services.
According to the IAU, the industrial actions are similar to those carried out earlier in May.
The four-hour industrial actions target different work shifts and thus affect many functions essential also to Finnair's flights throughout the day, such as ground handling operations and aircraft maintenance.
As industrial action will cause significant disruptions to the operation of flights, Finnair will have to cancel about 110 flights on Friday affecting about 8,000 passengers.
Finnair will offer passengers of cancelled flights an alternative flight.
Finnair has previously allowed passengers, scheduled to travel on strike days to reschedule their flights.
Passengers with flights on June 2 or June 4 can already change their travel dates by contacting Finnair customer service or the party that sold the ticket.
Passengers whose flight was cancelled due to industrial action will be informed about the cancellation as soon as it has been done.
After this, the customer will receive a message and be offered a new route.
The offered routing can be changed within the limits of flight availability. Alternatively, passengers can cancel their reservation and apply for a refund for the unused ticket.
"We are deeply sorry that our customers' important travel plans are once again disrupted. We are doing everything we can to provide our customers with alternative routing as quickly as possible," said Jaakko Schildt, Finnair's Chief Operating Officer.
The IAU has also announced similar strike on June 2 and June 4.
Earlier on May 19, Finnair also cancelled about 110 flights due to the strike observed by the unions.
On May 16, Finnair cancelled about 60 flights due to a four-hour strike enforced by the trade unions.
On May 5, Finnair cancelled about 100 flights due to a four-hour strike enforced by the trade unions.
Finnair also cancelled about 140 flights on May 2 due to strike.
On March 27, Finnair cancelled about 70 flights due to strike called by the IAU and the Finnish Transport Workers' Union (AKT).
