HSL ticket inspectors to pilot body camera use in public transports
The Helsinki Regional Transport Authority (Helsingin seudun liikenne – HSL) is starting a pilot project of using body camera by ticket inspectors in the public transports from Wednesday, said HSL in a press release on Monday.
The three-month pilot project will assess how the use of body cameras affects the safety of ticket inspectors and overall security in public transport.
The body cameras capable of recording both video and audio, will be activated only when it is necessary.
The cameras will be set in the uniforms of the inspectors and can be activated, if safety situation is threatened in the transports.
“Safety is extremely important to us. Therefore, any means that can be used to try to improve the safety of passengers and staff are at least worth considering,” said Chief of HSL Ticket Inspection unit Satu Koskinen in the press release, adding that they are now piloting body cameras for ticket inspectors.
Koskinen also said various organisations reported that use of body camera reduced their risks and threatening situations.
During and after the trial, the authority will evaluate the effectiveness of the body cameras to see whether they help to prevent threatening or dangerous situations and contribute to overall safety in public transport.
Some ticket inspectors will be equipped with the body cameras during the pilot project but it will be introduced permanently in future, if satisfactory results come from the pilot project.
