Turku University temporarily expels 4 students for cheating

The University of Turku expelled four students temporarily for cheating in the examination, university sources said.

The students were found using smartphones or other devices during electronic examinations resulting the expulsion.

One of the expelled students belongs to the Faculty of Medicine, one Open University and the rest two belong to Turku School of Economics.

The university authority took the decision against them in December 2024, which entered into force on August 1, 2025, said Petri Sjöblom, Director of Student and Academic Affairs of University of Turku.

“The Board considers intended and planned academic misconduct a serious act which will always lead to expulsion unless there are mitigating circumstances,” Sjöblom told Daily Finland, quoting the expulsion order as saying.

Meanwhile, during the spring term 2025 the decision was actively communicated together with the Student Union and the instructions for students were updated, Sjöblom added.

Acting ethically is one of the main values of the University of Turku and it is also the core of all academic activity, said the Director.

According to the University, the Board of the University may expel a student for a fixed period, if their deed (in this case academic misconduct) is serious. The Board considered from August 1 on intended and planned cheating a serious violation of the ethical conduct.

“The point of the decision is not to increase the number of sanctions but to prevent cheating and to stress the importance of ethical conduct in the context of university studies,” Sjöblom added.
