YKI tests registration system changes due to rising applicants

The authority is bringing changes to the registration system of the intermediate level tests for the National Certificates of Language Proficiency (YKI) from September 8 following increasing number of applicants during the recent years, said the Finnish National Agency for Education.

The changes are introducing to make the registration for YKI tests smoother and providing more opportunities for participants to take part in the tests, said the agency.

In spring 2024, the agency reported that the places for the tests have been filled at an increasing rate and sought to increase the number of YKI test organisers and develop the registration system with input from applicants.

In the past, participants needed to contact the test centre to reschedule or cancel their registration, but now participants can reschedule or cancel their registration personally in the My Studyinfo service.

The waiting lists for YKI tests provide added flexibility and replace the previously used email notifications of available seats.

To register for a YKI test, applicants must log in to the system using Suomi.fi e-Identification or via email.

If the applicants logged in using Suomi.fi e-Identification, they will be able to view their YKI test registration in the My Studyinfo service and on the My YKI registrations page, they can view and edit their registrations for YKI tests.

The applicants can view their registrations for the last 12 months but can reschedule registration only once.

They will also be able to cancel registration, view the tests for which they are on the waiting list and accept a place in a test from the waiting list.

The applicants can reschedule or cancel their registration no later than 8:00 a.m. on the test day.

Applicants can only register for one YKI test or its waiting list on the same test day.

Once applicants have registered for a waiting list, they will receive a confirmation email. The email will include a link that applicants can use to check their position on the waiting list.

If they receive a place in a YKI test from the waiting list, they will be notified of this by email.

After receiving a place in a YKI test from the waiting list, applicants will need to pay the test fee by the due date.

The payment link, however, will remain valid for one day. If the applicants do not pay the test fee on time, they will lose their place in the YKI test.

The place in a YKI test from the waiting list will be offered one week before the test date at the latest.

YKI tests have been organising since 1994. Since 2003, it has been possible to use the YKI certificate to prove sufficient proficiency when applying for Finnish citizenship.

Sufficient language proficiency can be proved, for example, with the intermediate level YKI certificate in Finnish or Swedish.
